How to Visit an Alpaca Ranch: Practical Guide
Visiting an alpaca ranch is an experience that combines connection with nature, learning about these fascinating animals and moments of pure cuteness. If it's your first time, here is everything you need to know.
What can you expect on a visit?
Depending on the ranch, visits may include:
- Guided tour: a guide explains the characteristics of alpacas, their breeds and history.
- Feeding: many ranches allow you to hand-feed alpacas with herbs or pellets.
- Alpaca walks: you walk with an alpaca on a halter lead, like a very fluffy dog.
- Shearing demonstration: especially in spring, you can watch an alpaca being shorn.
- Spinning demonstration: some ranches show how fibre is turned into yarn.
- Shop: almost all ranches have a shop with alpaca fibre products.
When is the best time to visit?
Spring (April–June): shearing season. Alpacas look charmingly "buzz-cut" right after being shorn. Many calves are also born at this time, adding extra appeal.
Autumn: alpacas have regrown their fleece and are at their fluffiest. The autumn landscape makes for especially beautiful photos.
Summer and winter: also welcome, though extreme weather may limit outdoor activities.
How to behave with alpacas?
- Slow, calm movements: alpacas are startled by sudden movements.
- Soft voice: avoid shouting or making loud noises.
- No strong perfumes: intense smells can disturb the animals.
- Do not chase them: let them approach you out of their own curiosity.
- Pet them correctly: they prefer being touched on the back and neck, not on the head or face.
- Wear clothes you can get dirty: although unlikely, alpaca spit is unpleasant.
Is it suitable for children?
Absolutely yes. Alpacas are very tolerant of children, especially if they have been well socialised. It is a perfect educational experience: children learn about the origins of fabrics, animals and respect for nature.
Photography tips
- The best light is early morning or late afternoon.
- Crouching to their level produces the best shots.
- Alpacas tend to look directly at the camera with curiosity.
- Use burst mode: they move constantly and the perfect moment lasts an instant.
How much does a visit cost?
Prices vary greatly by country and activity type. In Spain, basic visits typically cost between €5 and €15 per person. Guided walks can reach €20–30. More complete experiences (half day with activities) can be around €40–60.
