The alpaca is a South American camelid domesticated thousands of years ago in the Andes. It is one of the most valued animals in the world for its soft fiber and calm temperament.

Characteristics

Alpacas measure between 81 and 99 cm in height and weigh between 48 and 84 kg. They live between 15 and 20 years and need to live in herds.

Types of alpaca

There are two breeds: Huacaya (fluffy, crimped fiber, the most common) and Suri (silky, long fiber that falls in locks).

Fun facts

Alpacas communicate through soft humming. They have no upper front teeth, making them harmless to humans.
