South American camelid domesticated in the Andes. Two breeds: Huacaya (crimped fiber) and Suri (silky fiber).
They measure 81โ99 cm tall and weigh 48โ84 kg. They live between 15 and 20 years.
Alpaca fiber is softer than sheep wool, hypoallergenic and more durable. They are shorn once a year.
They are ruminants that feed mainly on grass and hay. Their environmental impact is very low.
Calm, curious and sociable animals. They need to live in herds and communicate with gentle hums.
